Why Should I Get Tested for OSA?

The National Transportation Safety Board says sleepiness in general has played a role in 31 to 41% of crashes of commercial vehicles, resulting in 1,500 to 2,000 deaths a year. A Johns Hopkins study suggests that a person’s chances of dying early increases 46% if he or she has severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
Fatigue, including medical conditions affecting sleep, is one of the transportation safety board’s top targets. Commercial motor vehicle drivers are at an increased risk for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Medical Review Board has recommended that commercial motor vehicle drivers undergo testing for OSA if they have a positive Berlin Questionnaire or a BMI > 35 kg/m. Together, Motion Specialties and your company, are working to provide a safe and timely solution for this recommendation which includes the diagnosis and treatment of OSA.

Treatment for OSA

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is an effective and well accepted treatment for OSA.
CPAP delivers air at a fixed pressure while you sleep, relieving the airway obstruction. As a result you experience healthier sleep and more alertness during the day.

What Happens if OSA is not Treated?

Possible increased risk of:

  • High Blood Pressure
  • Decreased sexual drive
  • Heart disease
  • Fatigue-related motor vehicle accidents
  • Decreased quality of life
