Muscular Dystrophy

Causes of  Muscular Dystrophy

Specific types of MD have specific causes but they are all inherited diseases. They are caused by a genetic disorder of some type that affect either the nerves to the muscles or the muscles themselves. Many types of MD are associated with the lack of or deformity of dystrophin protein's in the muscle fibres.

Symptoms of Muscular Dystrophy

The symptoms of Muscular Dystrophy are muscle weakness and deterioration. These symptoms, depending on the type of MD, can include drooping eyes, difficulty walking, muscle strength, drooling, coordination problems and/or slow development.

Some types of MD can cause lung and heart problems which may not have any outward symptoms. Once diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy, physicians will monitor the condition and function of these organs if necessary.

In some types of the disease mental retardation can be a symptom.
