BACK CARE EDUCATION - GENERAL
This session is appropriate for any individual who is interested in learning how to prevent back injury and maintain a “healthy” back.

CORRECT SELECTION OF LIFT, TRANSFER AND POSITIONING EQUIPMENT
There is a wide continuum of equipment available for lifts and transfers. Often it may be challenging to determine which equipment is appropriate for the client based on their abilities and environmental barriers. Join this session to learn about the range of equipment available, client and environmental criteria that needs to be considered prior to implementation of equipment. This session will focus on mechanical lifts and slings, but alternative repositioning equipment will be discussed as well.

SAFE CLIENT HANDLING SEMINAR (TRAIN-THE-TRAINER)
Similar to the sessions entitled “Correct Selection of Client Handling Equipment” and “Lift, Transfer and Repositioning Training”, this session is appropriate for members of an Injury Prevention Team or Lifting “Champions” within your organization. This session aims to coach and empower its participants to act as your in-house lift and transfer resource person.

UNDERSTANDING THERAPEUTIC SURFACES
The focus of this session is to define different types of therapeutic surfaces and understand their importance in a comprehensive treatment plan. Participants will enhance their ability to choose an appropriate therapeutic surface based on contributing factors.

THE ROLE OF PSW/HCA IN WOUND PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT
This session identifies and reinforces the ability of the PSW and HCA to prevent and manage wounds. We will address the importance of their unique role of viewing and assessing their clients’ skin on a daily basis. We will review the characteristics of the skin and the stages of wounds. Causes and prevention of pressure ulcers as well as relieving interventions will be addressed. Note: This session complements “Understanding Therapeutic Surfaces”.

INFECTION CONTROL
To define infection control and discuss routine practices is the purpose of this session. We will review the common infections and address some of the current “super bugs” that we currently deal with. ELDER ABUSE
This session will explore the different types of elder abuse and suggested warning signs associated with each type of abuse. Potential contributing risk factors to elder abuse will be discussed as well as suggestions for mitigating those risk factors.

UNDERSTANDING COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT AND DEALING WITH CHALLENGING BEHAVIOURS
Our educators act as P.I.E.C.E.S. Canada (www.piecescanada.com) Resource Persons. This interactive session defines cognitive impairment and briefly reviews the different types of dementia. Participants will increase their awareness in identifying and communicating behaviour changes. General tips for dealing with challenging behaviours will be discussed as well. Note: Upon special request, participants can participate in a simulation of living with cognitive impairment.
Session Time: 30 minutes (45 minutes is highly recommended to complete the simulation)

WHO CARES FOR THE CAREGIVER?
This popular education session is designed to acknowledge the issues that caregivers may face such as stress, caregiver burnout and compassion fatigue. The focus of this session is to learn strategies on how to prevent and manage with the aforementioned issues faced by caregivers. Overall, this session empowers participants to achieve “work-caregiving-life” balance and encourages the cooperation of co-workers to understand and be supportive of one another.

FALLS PREVENTION
This session will enhance your knowledge of the policy, procedures and guidelines used to address falls prevention. We will review the importance of an assessment upon admission in order to identify those residents who are at risk for falls. We will also review preventative approaches through exploring various fall prevention strategies and interventions. The importance of monitoring and evaluating resident outcomes as well as addressing the significant role an interdisciplinary team plays in fall prevention and management will be discussed.
