Is there value in choosing the tub versus the shower?
Having a bath is very therapeutic.
It relaxes muscles, eases aches and pains and just the idea of a nice warm bath is soothing, but as people age there are many different aspects of their lives that make it difficult, impossible or downright dangerous to get in and out of a bath tub

Caring in Healthcare
The deepest Principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.
William James
I came across this quote today as I was working on a presentation that I needed to revise and deliver to a group of personal support workers at a long term care facility. The topic is “PSW’s Role in Wound Care” and it really made me reflect on the numerous comments I usually get when I stand in front of a group and state the topic.

What is a Microclimate?
In relation to pressure ulcer development, microclimate was initially a term used to describe three aspects of the interface between the skin and a support surface — skin temperature, humidity and air movement. In early pressure ulcer publications, the maintenance of a favourable microclimate was seen to be a key modifier of the ability of skin and underlying soft tissue to withstand prolonged stress (eg. pressure and shear). However, the concept has been largely overlooked since the 1970′s.

Did you know that all behaviour has meaning?
Usually behaviour is due to an unmet need. So why then is it so difficult to care for someone with dementia? I believe people struggle because we forget that it may be as simple as going back to the basics. If we understand that behaviors such as agitation, repetitive questions, shadowing or uncooperativeness can be very frustrating to the caregiver but are part of a brain dysfunction linked to dementia, and that dementia itself does not create these behaviors; we can better care for someone with dementia.
