Motion Ottawa Store Offers Elevator & Lift Test Drives
“An elevator, for example, can cost around the same price as a new car. You wouldn’t buy a car from a brochure, so why would you want to purchase an elevator without seeing it first? This is a way for clients to test drive the equipment before they purchase it.”
Motion Specialties has multiple locations across Canada and plan on incorporating Access Centre’s into them to cater to the growing popularity of residential elevators and home accessibility products. A focused team of industry experts is able to educate and put clients in the right equipment to suit their needs.

Many seniors choose to age in place because they want to hold on to their independence, and they’re emotionally attached to their home. But when getting up and down the stairs becomes a challenge and a risk, families begin exploring options, most of which are outside of the senior’s home.

Making Bathrooms Adaptable and Functional
Here are some photos of a recent project under taken by Motion Specialties. The space in this bathroom, as with any bathroom in an older home was limited, so what was created was a fully encompassing room where water didn’t necessarily matter as the entire floor was protected and sloped to the drain. All thresholds were removed and attractive bars were added.

“We are going to stay”: Making a home accessible and loving it again
Renovating a home is a huge business in Canada. Home-owners are looking to create equity while ensuring comfort and style. For the average family or individual an investment in a home should be for life but that may not always be the case when circumstances change and your home becomes more of an obstacle then a place of rest, shelter and enjoyment.
The concept of aging in place has been around for a number of years and takes the concept of Universal Design into practice. Universal Design principles are those that state that when a home is designed with everyone in mind then everyone will be able to access and utilize all elements of a home throughout its lifespan. These principles have been put into practice in many countries but they don’t always address the practical side of construction, finances or family need such as neighbourhood services and amenities.

Determining Factors in Remaining in a Home & Making it Accessible
Deciding to renovate or move to a new home?
How do you decide whether to renovate your existing home to make it accessible for a family member or move to a new home?
Randy Sora, a design and management consultant with EZ Access Incorporated, a company that designs accessible homes, says the answer depends on a number of factors and it’s important to fully investigate all your options before making a decision.
When faced with a significant renovation, he advises hiring a design consultant. Unlike a contractor who may try to talk you into a $100,000 renovation without explaining other options, a design consultant will work with you to determine what is best in your particular situation.
The very first person to consult, however, should be your occupational therapist (OT) – your best resource for advice on what equipment and modifications your family member needs within the home.
“We’re not medical people,” says Randy. “We know how to address functional needs within the structure of the home but we need someone to advise us on those needs and the best person is the OT.”
